Bishop José de Jesús Sahagún de la Parra is the world's oldest bishop. At 103 years old, he still celebrates the Holy Eucharist. He is one of four surviving bishops who participated in the Second Vatican Council.
Monsignor was born in Cotija, Michoacán, Mexico, in 1922, where he grew up to become a priest. He was ordained on May 26, 1946. Fifteen years later, Pope John XXIII appointed him bishop of the Diocese of Tula, in the state of Hidalgo, a historic event, as it was precisely in this place where the Diocese was born.
In 1985, Saint John Paul II appointed him bishop of the Diocese of Lázaro Cárdenas.
In 1993, he was granted retirement and returned to his homeland of Michoacán to shepherd an emerging community. He was also responsible for the construction of the "El Huerto" Major Seminary, which opened in 1964.
The center of his life is the daily Eucharist he celebrates and his constant contact with the people, which allows him to maintain a joyful attitude even at 103 years of age.
He took part at the Second Vatican Council after being ordained bishop; Don José de Jesús Sahagún, bishop emeritus of Ciudad Lázaro Cárdenas, had only been in the episcopate for a year when the council work began.
He is the bishop emeritus of Ciudad Lázaro Cárdenas and the only living Mexican bishop who served as a Council Father at the Second Vatican Council . In fact, he celebrated his 61st anniversary of episcopal ordination just last September 8th; that is, he had been ordained for just over a year when the Council's work began. It was over 60 years ago, on October 11, 1962, when Pope John XXIII inaugurated the work of this important ecclesial event in the Vatican Basilica , in which 2,400 Council Fathers from around the world participated, among them also the Mexican bishops José de Jesús Sahagún, Jesús García, Carlos Quintero, José Guadalupe Padilla, José Trinidad Sepúlveda and Anselmo Zarza Bernal .
In particular, Sahagún de la Parra participated in sessions one, two and four , being at that time bishop of the diocese of Tula, in the state of Hidalgo.
The episcopal motto of Sahagún de la Parra is: "That all may be one." This particular Church recognizes its pastor's work above all in building Christian communities committed to the integral development of peoples ; promoting ecclesial base communities; training pastoral agents for evangelization; and paying particular attention to indigenous peoples and the seminary, in accordance with the Second Vatican Council.
José de Jesús Sahagún de la Parra was born on January 1, 1922 in the town of Cotija , state of Michoacán, and was ordained a priest on May 26, 1946 in Zamora, in the same Mexican state, diocese in which he now resides.
He was appointed bishop of the diocese of Tula on May 22, 1961 , a position he assumed on September 8, 1961.
On September 11, 1985, Sahagún de la Parra was appointed bishop of the diocese of Ciudad Lázaro Cárdenas , a position he left on May 3, 1993.
He is currently being cared for by the diocesan sisters of Our Lady of the Angels , who say the bishop emeritus is generally in stable health.
In a concelebrated Eucharist at his home to commemorate his 100th birthday, the bishop emphasized the importance of living in peace because "God our Father gave us an enormously long life, the ability to think and understand what is good for us and what is bad for us; he gave us the ability to love Christ, our family, our friends, and ourselves."
