Pope Francis' Apartment Sealed and Image Removed from Holy See's Website as Vatican Announces Sede Vacante

Following the death of Pope Francis at age 88, the Catholic Church is in "vacant seat" state, beginning the process to elect his successor through a conclave. Cardinal Kevin Joseph Farrell, Cameroonian, temporarily administers the Vatican according to the Apostolic Constitution Universi Dominici Gregis.

In the canon law of the Catholic Church, sede vacante refers to the state during which a diocese or archdiocese is without a prelate installed in office, with the prelate's office being the cathedral. The term is used in reference to papal vacancies occurring upon the pope's death or resignation. Instead of the papal coat of arms being posted on Vatican letterhead, buildings, the above (far left) image (heraldic representation) is used. On the Social Media site X the Pope's image has also been removed from his official @Pontifex account now called "Apostolica Sedes Vacans". The Cardinals will begin to arrive at the Vatican until they are ready to set a date for the Conclave to start.

Pope Francis' apartments have been sealed in the Apostolic Palace and Casa Santa Marta.
This April 21st evening there is the rite of confirmation of death and deposition in the coffin in the chapel of the Vatican Domus.
The rite of certification of death and the placing in the coffin of the body of Pope Francis, who passed away on April 21, 2025, took place in the evening at 8:00 pm in the Chapel on the ground floor of Casa Santa Marta. The certification of death was read. The act was validated by Cardinal Kevin Farrell, Camerlengo of the Holy Roman Church. The celebration lasted just under an hour.
Seals were placed today in the papal apartment on the third floor of the Apostolic Palace and, this evening, also in the apartment on the second floor of Casa Santa Marta, where the Pontiff resided. From this evening, collaborators have access to greet the Pope.

The first general congregation of cardinals will take place tomorrow morning, during which a possible date for the funeral could be decided.
A prayer provided by the Knights of Columbus that is suitable for this period:

O Lord Jesus Christ, Supreme Pastor of Your Church, we thank you for the ministry of Pope Francis and the selfless care with which he has led us as Successor of Peter, and Your Vicar on earth.

Good Shepherd, who founded Your Church on the rock of Peter’s faith and have never left Your flock untended, look with love upon us now, and sustain Your Church in faith, hope, and charity.

Grant, Lord Jesus, in Your boundless love for us, a new Pope for Your Church who will please You by his holiness and lead us faithfully to You, who are the same yesterday, today, and forever. Amen.
