“O Salutaris Hostia,” is Latin for “O Saving Victim,” is a Eucharistic hymn of St. Thomas Aquinas, the famous Dominican, Doctor of the Church. This forms the last two verses of the hymn Verbum supernum prodiens, sung on the feast of Corpus Christi. This together with the “Pange Lingua,” this hymn were written at the request of Pope Urban IV, who instituted the Solemnity of Corpus Christi in 1264.
Lyrics in English translated from the Latin :
O saving Victim, Who expandest the door of heaven,
Hostile armies press, Give strength; bear aid.
To the One and Triune Lord, May there be everlasting glory;
who life without end gives us in the homeland. Amen.
