United States Renewed Membership in the Geneva Consensus Declaration on Promoting Women’s Health and Strengthening the Family
Marco Rubio, Secretary of State
Today, the United States informed signatories of the Geneva Consensus Declaration of our intent to rejoin immediately. Established in 2020, this historic declaration, led by the United States, was a joint initiative with Brazil, Egypt, Hungary, Indonesia, and Uganda. The group now has more than 35 signatories. The Declaration has four main objectives: to secure meaningful health and development gains for women; to protect life at all stages; to defend the family as the fundamental unit of society; and to work together across the UN system to realize these values.
The Trump Administration is committed to supporting families, promoting women’s health, and protecting children at all stages of life. The United States will pursue these objectives in cooperation with member states in the UN system and through our continued shared ambition for improved health for women and girls. Investing in women’s health and well-being saves lives, allows women and girls more opportunities, and protects the family as the fundamental unit of society.
Excerpts from Statement by Valerie Huber, President & CEO of the Institute for Women’s Health, on Trump Rejoining the U.S. to the Geneva Consensus Declaration
“I commend President Donald J. Trump for fulfilling his promise to rejoin the Geneva Consensus Declaration (GCD), a first-of-its-kind global coalition of nations dedicated to improving women’s health, strengthening families, affirming that abortion is not an international human right, and upholding the sovereign right of nations to govern free from ideological colonialism.

This decisive action will restore America’s leadership in global health diplomacy, empowering nations to prioritize women’s health over divisive political agendas.

Our Institute continues to be a key champion of the GCD, recognizing this commitment of nations is an essential foundation for accelerated health and well-being for women and girls. We look forward to partnering with even more nations to help them operationalize the GCD’s principles – transforming commitments into action.

The Biden administration’s withdrawal from the GCD misrepresented and undermined the coalition’s commitment to advance health and thriving for women at every stage of life. Despite relentless efforts by critics to dismantle and discredit it, IWH celebrates that the GCD has not only survived but thrived over the past four years – expanding its membership and influence.

By rejoining, President Trump sends a bold message that the United States stands with sovereign nations to defend the real health needs of women against coercive tactics by global power players. This marks the beginning of a renewed effort to advance authentic health care for women, accelerate the GCD’s momentum, and pave the way for a brighter, healthier future for women everywhere.

We are grateful that from the very start of his presidential administration, President Trump is once again taking a leadership role in promoting health and thriving for women and girls, both in the U.S. and around the world.”
