Russian Missile Attacks Damage Historic St. Nicholas Church in Kyiv, Ukraine

On December 20, a historic landmark in the heart of Kiev - St. Nicholas Church - was damaged during another wave of Russian missile attacks. The blast wave shattered the stained glass windows and the rose window on the church's facade, and the interior plaster was also significantly damaged.
"During the shelling, the rose window and the side windows were smashed," said the parish priest, Father Paweł Wyszkowski OMI. He stressed that although the church structure had been preserved, severe damage was also visible inside. "We are now waiting for the ministry commission to assess the extent of the damage. Decisions on the next steps must be made, as the church was already in a very poor condition," the priest added.
St. Nicholas Church is one of two Roman Catholic churches in Kyiv built before 1917. It was erected in 1899-1909 in the Neo-Gothic style by Kyiv architect Vladyslav Horodetskyi.
Since 2009, the church building has been in disrepair. Activists have repeatedly noted that parts of the facade are falling off.
In 2021, a fire broke out in the church. After the incident, the Ministry of Culture promised to transfer the church to the community of believers, but as of December 2024, this has not happened.
