Spain's National Police arrest one of the “EUROPE'S MOST WANTED” wanted for aggravated homicide. Local media reported the suspect's name as Viorel Nae, a 55-year-old Romanian who is thought to be one of those who took part in murdering Father Gyula Csontos in Hungary, and assaulting an elderly nun who was seriously injured and died a few years later....
The fugitive was subject to two European Arrest Warrants (EAWs) issued by the authorities of Hungary and Romania for the crimes of aggravated homicide and against road safety, respectively, and faces life imprisonment for these crimes.
The suspect lived in an area far from the city centre - with little traffic of people and vehicles - and took multiple security measures before leaving his home, which is why the agents had to pretend to be park and garden maintenance workers in order to identify and arrest him.
Agents of the National Police have arrested, in a municipality in the province of Girona, one of the "EUROPE'S MOST WANTED" wanted for aggravated homicide. The fugitive had two European Arrest Warrants (EAWs) issued by the authorities of Hungary and Romania for the crimes of aggravated homicide and against road safety, respectively, -in addition to a national warrant for theft- facing life imprisonment for these facts. The suspect lived in an area far from the urban center -with little traffic of people and vehicles- and took multiple security measures before leaving his home, reason why the agents had to pass themselves off as park and garden maintenance workers in order to identify and arrest him.
The events for which the fugitive was sought occurred in August 1991 in the Hungarian town of Paloznak. The suspect, together with other men, broke into a parish in the town to steal valuables found there. During the course of the events, they surprised the priest who ran the parish (an elderly man) while he was sleeping and, after tying him to a chair and aggressively assaulting him, he died. They also tied up and assaulted a nun, also elderly, until she confessed where the valuables and money were. Although the woman survived the attack, she was seriously injured.
These events prompted FAST Hungary to launch an investigation, including him on EUROPOL's “EUROPE'S MOST WANTED FUGITIVES” list.
He took multiple security measures
As the investigation progressed, and thanks to the comparison of a fingerprint found at the scene with the crime, a match was found that allowed one of the suspects to be identified and arrested, who ended up confessing to the murder.
Last May, given the seriousness of the events and the danger of the fugitive, Hungary issued the European Arrest Warrant. It was then that National Police officers began their investigations to locate him. At first, they were able to prove that he was temporarily passing through the province of Huelva; however, he took multiple security measures, not establishing continuous residences in the same place and using various false identities to avoid detection. He also took precautions when contacting third parties by phone, using applications that avoided connection to telephone antennas.
Finally, in mid-November, the agents managed to locate him in the province of Girona and set up a device in the surroundings of his possible home. The fact that the place was far from the urban centre, with little movement of people and vehicles, added to the security measures that the fugitive took before leaving the house, or taking his vehicle, made surveillance and identification tasks extremely difficult. For this reason, and to avoid being discovered, the agents posed as park and garden maintenance workers. In this way, when the fugitive went out onto the public road, with the intention of taking his car, the investigators were able to recognise him and proceed to arrest him.
