Christ the King: The Divine Healer and the HMO (Health Maintenance Organization) of the Soul - (Luke 5:31).
In the above bible verse, Jesus said, "It is the sick who need the doctor, not those who are healthy."
He likens His mission to that of a physician who attends to the sick.
The Solemnity of Christ the King, which is celebrated on the last Sunday of the Church's liturgical year (today) honours Jesus as the universal King who rules all creation with love, mercy, and justice.
This feast reminds us that Christ's kingship is not about earthly power or domination but about serving, healing, and bringing people into God's kingdom (Basilia tou Theou).
On this Solemnity, we recognize His kingship as one rooted in service and compassion. His rule prioritizes restoring the broken and providing for the needy, much like a good HMO that focuses on the well-being of all its enrollees (customers).
Just as HMOs emphasise proactive care through regular check-ups, vaccinations, periodic wellness programs, health talks, and ensuring people live healthily; Jesus offers us eternal wellness by proactively expressing his love to us via the church (especially the sacraments), those around us, etc.
HMO system is designed to cater to diverse people, from those with minor, intermediate and major issues, based on their health plans. This Solemnity highlights Jesus’ inclusivity, welcoming "everyone" into His kingdom, irrespective of their social or financial status.
Acknowledging our need for care—whether spiritual or physical—is the first step toward healing. Investing in an HMO ensures access to physical health services when required. With Jesus, the only investment that is required of us is to love God and our neighbour.
We are to recognize Jesus as the ultimate healer and ruler of our lives.
Just as we rely on HMOs to address most of our physical ailments, so also we need to rely on Christ, the "King-Physician" to restore and sustain us spiritually.
