From November 4 to 7, the Catholic Bishops of Cuba met in Havana to celebrate the 164th Ordinary Assembly. It was the occasion to reiterate the welcome to the new Representative of the Pope in Cuba, Monsignor Antoine Camilleri . The meeting began with a moment of retreat before the exposed Blessed Sacrament, accompanied by a Lectio Divina with the text of the encounter of the blind Bartimaeus with the Lord.
Within the framework of this meeting, the elections for the Presidency of the COCC, the Episcopal Commissions and the Pastoral Commissions for the three-year period 2024-2027 took place. The results are attached to this Information Note below:
Presidency of the COCC for the three-year period 2024 – 2027.
President: Monsignor Arturo Gonzalez Amador, Bishop of Santa Clara.
Vice President: Monsignor Juan Gabriel Diaz Ruiz, Bishop of Matanzas.
Secretary General: Monsignor Eloy Ricardo Dominguez Martinez, Auxiliary Bishop of Havana.
The meeting of the Bishops took place under the influence of the recent impact of Hurricane Oscar on territories of the Diocese of Guantanamo – Baracoa, and the passage of Hurricane Rafael, on November 6, through towns of the Diocese of Pinar del Rio and the Archdiocese of Havana.
Caritas and Solidarity Actions in Recovery
Bishop Silvano Pedroso has shared the consequences of the passage of Hurricane Oscar through the territory of his diocese. He has highlighted, along with the desolate panorama that is being observed, the testimonies of charity, help and solidarity that are also being felt. He has highlighted the role of Caritas and the links established with other bodies of society, to achieve a more effective recovery action.
Bishop Marcos Pirán, Auxiliary Bishop of Holguín, shared his reflections and experiences at the 2nd session of the Synod on Synodality, where he represented the Cuban Church.
The Bishops exchanged ideas and initiatives to be developed during the Jubilee Year 2025. The conviction prevailed to strengthen and privilege the celebrations that will take place in the local Churches, underlining the fundamental dimensions of the Jubilee: conversion, penance and sacramental confession, works of mercy, pilgrimages to the Shrines, the gift of indulgence and the strong call to revitalize hope.
