Bishops of Mexico Meet with New President Sheinbaum Voicing "deep concern for the situation of violence that affects various regions of the country" FULL TEXT
Mexican Episcopal Conference from Mexico City, November 13, 2024 met with the New President Claudia Sheinbaum and expressed concern over violence. The report “MX: La Guerra en Números” (Mexico: The War in Numbers) of T-ResearchMX, noted that since the new administration on Oct. 1 there have been 3,175 homicides in the country. Whereas, former President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador's six-year term witnessed 199,621 homicides.
In an atmosphere of institutional dialogue and mutual respect, the Mexican Episcopal Conference (CEM) today received Dr. Claudia Sheinbaum Pardo, Constitutional President of the United Mexican States, within the framework of the CXVII Plenary Assembly held at the CEM's Casa Lago.
During the meeting, the Bishops of Mexico held a frank and constructive dialogue on fundamental issues that concern the people of Mexico. Among the priorities addressed were the construction of peace in our communities, the strengthening of the rule of law, as well as the preservation of the balance between the powers of the nation. We also expressed the need to build bridges of dialogue that favor national unity, an indispensable element to achieve the peace and integral development that our country yearns for. Without unity there is no peace or progress. As pastors close to the daily reality of our people, we address urgent concerns that directly affect Mexican families: security in our communities, the situation of poverty that afflicts so many brothers, the accompaniment of mothers seeking help in their tireless work, and the need to guarantee access to spiritual care for the sick in hospitals. Likewise, we reiterate our unwavering commitment to the defense of life in all its stages and the dignity of the human person. In addition, the bishops concerned with the reality of our people share with the President our deep concern for the situation of violence that affects various regions of the country, as well as the devastation of our natural resources. We recognize the efforts made to address the social causes of these problems, but we emphasize the need for more effective strategies for the disarmament of criminal groups and the protection of our communities. 1
In educational matters, we express our interest and willingness to contribute to the comprehensive formation of the new generations, always respecting the plurality of visions and methods of knowledge that enrich our society. We consider it essential that the national educational project be inclusive of all sectors involved and recognize the diverse dimensions of the human being.
The Catholic Church in Mexico reaffirms its commitment to the construction of peace and reiterates its willingness to collaborate, from its pastoral and evangelizing mission, in the implementation of the National Peace Agenda, recognizing the urgency of joining forces in a national dialogue between authorities and civil society to achieve this common objective.
We appreciate the visit of the head of the Executive Branch and value her willingness to engage in dialogue, as well as her proposals for collaboration and coordination on common issues that benefit the construction of justice and peace. We trust that this meeting will contribute to strengthening the channels of institutional communication for the benefit of the people of Mexico. As pastors, we will always be willing to work tirelessly for peace, justice and the common good of our nation.
We place these efforts under the protection of Saint Mary of Guadalupe, Queen of Mexico and Empress of America, asking for her intercession for the peace and well-being of our people.
《Blessed are those who labor for the peace, for they will be called children of God》 (Mt 5,9)
