OTTAWA, 28 October 2024 – The Most Rev. Alain Faubert, Bishop of Valleyfield, was elected to the Ordinary Council of the General Secretariat of the Synod. The Ordinary Council will play a fundamental role both in the implementation of Synod on Synodality and in the preparation of the next Synod.

“I am very honored to have been elected. Along with the 16 other members of the Council and the General Secretariat of the Synod, I want to contribute to the growth of an increasingly synodal Church: a People of God on the move, attentive to the Spirit and in solidarity with our world, faithful to the Good News of God’s love for all. This is a great challenge that we must face together!”

As stated in the Apostolic Constitution Episcopalis Communio (Art. 24, §1-3), the Ordinary Council of the General Secretariat is tasked with preparing and executing the Ordinary General Assembly. It is chaired by the Holy Father and plays a vital role within the General Secretariat of the Synod. The members of the Ordinary Council take up office at the conclusion of the Ordinary General Assembly that elects them. They are members of the subsequent Ordinary General Assembly and their mandate ceases at the conclusion of the latter.

Bishop Faubert, one of the CCCB’s delegates at the Synod on Synodality, was ordained to the priesthood in 1995 for the Archdiocese of Montreal. In 2016, Pope Francis appointed him Auxiliary Bishop of Montreal. In 2024, he was appointed by the Holy Father as the ninth Bishop of Valleyfield, where he will be installed on 28 November 2024.
