Vatican Announces a Press Conference on the "spiritual experience" of Medjugorje

The Vatican has just announced that a major Press Conference on Medjugorje will be held on Thursday, September 19, 2024, at 11:30 a.m. The theme of this Conference will be: "The Spiritual Experience in Medjugorje". (Source: https://press.vatican.va/content/salastampa/it/bollettino/pubblico/2024/09/16/0698/01397.html

There will be three speakers: Cardinal Victor Fernandez (Prefect of the Dicastery for the Doctrine of the Faith), Archbishop Armando Matteo (Secretary of the Doctrinal Section of the DDF) and Andrea Tornielli (Editorial Director of the Dicastery for Communication).

This Conference will be broadcast live on the Vatican YouTube channel. In 1981, six ordinary children from the tiny hamlet of Medjugorje, in the former Yugoslavia, began experiencing miraculous visions of the Blessed Mother- the Madonna. 

Medjugorje celebrated their 43rd anniversary in June. In 2019, pilgrimages to Medjugorje were authorized by the Vatican. Medjugorje has become Europe's third most important apparition site, where each year more than 1 million people visit annually. It has been estimated that 30 million pilgrims have travelled to Međugorje since the reported apparitions began in 1981. In 2018, Pope Francis sent a special envoy to stay in Medjugorje. The visionaries explains that Mary's key message is Pray, Fast, Repent.

What is Medjugorje? 

On Wednesday June 24th, 1981, Our Lady appeared in Medjugorje for the first time. Međugorje literally means "between mountains", and is located in the Federation of Bosnia and Herzegovina, Europe. A couple of young people spent a beautiful afternoon below the hill Crnica when all of a sudden, they saw a bright figure enveloped in shining light, a beautiful young woman with a child in her arms, who gave them a friendly wave. The visionaries Vicka, Marija, Ivan, Ivanka, Mirjana and Jakov, who, on the second day of the regular apparitions, on June 25th, had the apparition together, from this day forth would become the six visionaries of Medjugorje. They have been chosen by Our Lady. The apparitions of Medjugorje are a mystical phenomenon, an awakening, a place where one can sense the closeness of God, the closeness of Jesus Christ and, in particular, the love and care of our Mother Mary.

In one of her first messages Our Lady askes for “Peace, peace, peace and only peace. Peace must reign between God and man and between people”. In doing so, she reveals us why she comes and what her main message is. This message of the Virgin Mary, the Queen of Peace, now quickly begins to spread throughout the whole world.

Today Medjugorje is a spiritual place where some feel heaven touches earth and millions of people find their deep love for God. They reconcile with God (through the sacrament of reconciliation), pray, fast, and repent.
