Orthodox Monastery in Greece is Destroyed by Fire



In Greece, the Orthodox monastery Panagia Axion Esti, near Varnavas, was destroyed and two other monasteries had to be evacuated. The devastating fires northeast of Athens have also caused serious damage to church institutions. The monastery was destroyed, according to the information portal "OrthodoxTimes", the monastery houses treasures and relics of the Archdiocese of Athens. Two other monasteries, the Ephraim Monastery, near Nea Makri and the Penteli Monastery, had to be evacuated. It is still unclear what damage was caused to these two monasteries. On Sunday, stormy winds fueled a small fire that had broken out in the Varnavas area and pushed it forward into a fire front - in some places so quickly that people had no choice but to flee and leave their belongings behind. According to initial estimates, an area of ​​100 square kilometers was destroyed. The fire service reported that new fires were still flaring up. As a result, the evacuation of houses was called for again on Tuesday morning. This time it affected a district of the coastal town of Nea Makri east of the Greek capital. On Tuesday, the fire service also recovered the body of a woman from a burned-down factory building, local media reported. This is the only fatality so far.
