 A Catholic Church in Cali, Colombia, South America, was the scene of a crime. The rosary was being just about to be prayed before Mass when a woman entered the church and shot a man named Erasmo Trujillo, age 50, dead. Another woman was injured from a stray bullet hitting her in the leg. The Cali parish closed its doors for three days due to the murder. The attack occurred at 6:15 pm Monday, July 15th, at the church, located in the Valle del Lili neighborhood.

Nearly 200 parishioners were gathered at Saint John Paul II Church, to pray the rosary (led by the nun pictured above). According to Father Oscar de la Vega, the vicar, at least 1,500 people usually take part in the prayer, which is regularly live streamed on social media.

Three days of mourning without in-person Masses in the Saint John Paul II parish were decreed by the ecclesiastical authorities of Cali, following the murder of one of the parishioners inside the premises.

At that time, those present were praying the rosary when a woman dressed in pink entered with a firearm and shot Erasmo Trujillo Mopán, 50 years old. One of the bullets wounded a woman who was nearby in the leg. The victim had a criminal record related to drug trafficking, in addition to having been linked to the criminal group known as 'Los Suitcases'. However, he was also “an active member of the community” who used to attend Mass every week with his wife, children, and grandchildren.

The female murderer escaped and, due to the severity of his injuries, Trujillo died at the scene.

Colonel Carlos Oviedo, commander of the Metropolitan Police of Cali, said that "this person had a criminal record and had been captured in 2016 for belonging to the criminal gang 'los Maleteros', for the crimes of drug trafficking and conspiracy to commit crimes."

According to press archives, the criminal organization “los Maleteros” was responsible for exporting cocaine to Europe and North America from the airport in Cali. In the operation in which Erasmo Trujillo was implicated, another 10 people were arrested at the time.

Following the murder, the Archdiocese of Cali urged the community to “protect life and stop any act that threatens the integrity of others, opting for dialogue and reconciliation as paths to peaceful resolution of the conflicts facing our city.”

Monsignor Luis Fernando Rodriguez Velasquez, Archbishop of Cali, expressed his overwhelming condemnation of the violent events that occurred on the night of this Monday, July 15, in the parish of San Juan Pablo II in the Vallecaucan capital, in which Mr. Erasmo Trujillo lost his life Mopan and another parishioner were injured. On June 23, another homicide occurred at a religious center in Montería. It happened in the parking lot of the Centro Familiar Cristiano church, where a hitman shot dead businessman Juan Carlos Gustavo Mejía Uribe, 63, who is being investigated for alleged ties to paramilitaries and the Clan del Golfo.
