What is the Right Attitude You Need Towards the Eucharist? 7 Key Insights to Consider when in the Presence of Jesus in the Eucharist
Nowadays we hear a whole lot of things from people about the Holy Eucharist.
1. According to Canon 898 of the current (1983) Code of Canon Law, Christ’s faithful are to hold the blessed Eucharist in the highest honour. They should take an active part in the celebration of the most august Sacrifice of the Mass; they should receive the sacrament with great devotion and frequently and should reverence it with the greatest adoration. In explaining the doctrine of this sacrament, pastors of souls are assiduously instructing the faithful about their obligation in this regard.
In the above canon we see what our attitude towards the Holy Eucharist should be, but unfortunately today we see Catholics that don’t believe in the real presence.
2. Some expect the Holy Eucharist to be a lucky charm and by extension hope not to have challenges or difficulties in life because they receive it, some prefer to be in the adoration chapel when mass is going on while they’ve not attended mass for that day (they fail to understand that Holy Mass is the highest prayer in the church), some pray the rosary during mass maybe with the mindset that it’ll make the mass more acceptable to God, some expect the forgiveness of their mortal sins by receiving the Holy Eucharist, etc. Perhaps all the aforementioned abnormalities and many others are the results of poor catechesis and very little or no understanding of the catholic faith. My people perish for the lack of knowledge. Hosea 4:6.
3. Today the church calls us to reflect deeply on the Holy Eucharist, its importance in our lives can never be overemphasized.
4. According to Canon 897, the most venerable sacrament is the blessed Eucharist, in which Christ the Lord himself is contained, offered and received, and by which the Church continually lives and grows.
6. The form and matter of this sacrament are the words of consecration, and bread & wine respectively.
Canon 900 §1 The only minister who, in the person of Christ, can bring into being the sacrament of the Eucharist, is a validly ordained priest.Canon 908 Catholic priests are forbidden to concelebrate the Eucharist with priests or ministers of Churches or ecclesial communities which are not in full communion with the Catholic Church.
7. O sacred banquet in which Christ is received as food, the memory of his Passion is renewed, the soul is filled with grace and a pledge of the life to come is given to us. -- St Thomas Aquinas.
If the Catholic Church were to be a company and the 7 sacraments are the products she offers to her target audience; it is safe to say that the Holy Eucharist would be her greatest product of all time.
5. Just as “product” is the most important element in the marketing mix, so also is the Holy Eucharist among other sacraments; they all point to it. It is the source and summit of the Christian Life (CCC 1324).6. The form and matter of this sacrament are the words of consecration, and bread & wine respectively.
