Pope Francis Appoints New Bishop, Joseph Yang Yongqiang, of Hangzhou in China - a Bishop who Attended the Synod
The Vatican announced today, that in coordination with China, Pope Francis appointed Bishop Joseph Yang Yongqiang as Bishop of Hangzhou in the Chinese province of Zhejiang on June 12th. The Vatican announced this on June 22nd.
In the context of the dialogue regarding the application of the Provisional Agreement between the Holy See and the People’s Republic of China, on 12 June 2024, the Holy Father appointed Bishop Joseph Yang Yongqiang as bishop of Hangzhou, Chinese Province of Zhejiang, transferring him from the see of Zhoucun, Chinese Province of Shandong.
Curriculum vitae
Bishop Joseph Yang Yongqiang was born on 11 April 1970 in Boxing, Shandong. He carried out his studies in philosophy and theology at the Holy Spirit Seminary of Shandong, and at the seminary of Sheshan in Shanghai. On 5 June 1995 he received priestly ordination. After carrying out the ministry of parish priest, he was sent to further his formation at the National Seminary of Beijing. He subsequently held the office of lecturer at the Holy Spirit Seminary of Shandong. He was appointed coadjutor bishop of Zhoucun, and consecrated on 15 November 2010. On 8 February 2013 he succeeded Bishop Ma Xuesheng. On 12 June 2024, Pope Francis appointed him bishop of Hangzhou.

Bishop Yongqiang was one of the two bishops from China who attended the Synod at the Vatican. The appointment, Bishop Joseph Yang Yongqiang was a transfer from his episcopal see of Zhoucun to Hangzhou. The framework for the step is the "dialogue regarding the application of the provisional agreement between the Holy See and the People's Republic of China," it continues.
The provisional agreement on the coordinated appointment of bishops was concluded in 2018 and has already been extended twice. According to Cardinal Secretary of State Parolin, the provisional agreement is to be extended again at the end of 2024.
