RIP Bishop Vitus Huonder, Bishop Emeritus of Chur, Switzerland, has Died at the Age of 81

Pope Benedict XVI appointed him bishop of Chur on 8 July 2007. Pope Francis accepted his resignation on 20 May 2019. Huonder then chose to live out his retirement in a Society of Saint Pius X house, with papal authorization.

As the Pius Brotherhood announced on its website, the Bishop Emeritus of Chur, Vitus Huonder, died on April 3rd. Huonder was hospitalized on March 19th. On March 24, Bishop Joseph Maria Bonnemain visited his predecessor in the hospital and brought the sick priest palm branches that had previously been blessed during the service in the cathedral.

On the Pius Brothers website it says about the former bishop's illness: “He was admitted to hospital on the feast of Saint Joseph, March 19th. The diagnosis was made on Monday, March 25th, Annunciation Day. From then on, Bishop Huonder showed a perfect docility to the ways of Providence and continually sacrificed his sufferings for the Holy Church. He was also always grateful to the Priestly Fraternity of St. Pius He gave an admirable example of prayer and love for the Shrine." The conservative Huonder, like his predecessor, Bishop Wolfgang Haas (1988/90-1997),  during his term of office (2007-2019).

Huonder was born on April 21, 1942 in Trun in the canton of Graubünden. After being ordained a priest and receiving his doctorate in 1973, he worked at the theological faculty at the University of Friborg and at the Chur Theological University. Twelve years in pastoral care followed. After completing his habilitation in liturgical studies, Bishop Haas appointed him vicar general for Graubünden, Glarus and Liechtenstein in 1990 and made him cathedral chapter in the same year.
