FULL TEXT Joint Statement:
Today, in the Vatican, representatives of the Roman Curia and the German Episcopal Conference (CET) met to continue the dialogue begun during the ad Limina Visit of the German Bishops in November 2022 and continued with a first exchange on 26 July 2023.
Today's meeting, which lasted the whole day, took place in a positive and constructive atmosphere. Some open theological questions raised in the documents of the Synodal Path of the Church in Germany were discussed. This made it possible to identify differences and convergences, according to the method adopted in the Final Synod Report of the Synod of the Universal Church of October 2023. A regular exchange was agreed between representatives of the CET and the Holy See on the further work of the Synodal Path and of the Synodal Committee. The German Bishops have clarified that this work will seek to identify the concrete forms of exercising Synodality in the Church in Germany, in conformity with the ecclesiology of the Second Vatican Council, the provisions of Canon Law and the fruits of the Synod of the universal Church, then submitting them to approval of the Holy See. The Parties have agreed to hold the next meeting before summer 2024.
Present for the Roman Curia were Cardinals Victor Fernandéz, Kurt Koch and Pietro Parolin, Robert F. Prevost, OSA, and Arthur Roche and Archbishop Filippo Iannone, O.Carm. Speaking for the CET were Bishops Georg Bätzing, Stephan Ackermann, Michael Gerber, Peter Kohlgraf, Bertram Meier, Franz-Josef Overbeck, respectively President of the CET and Presidents of the Episcopal Commissions for the Liturgy, for Vocations and Ecclesial Services, for Pastoral Care , for the Universal Church, for the Faith, as well as the General Secretary, Dr. Beate Gilles, and the Spokesperson of the CET, Matthias Kopp.
