1st Catholic Bible in the Norwegian Language is Published by Norway's Bible Society and Praised by Oslo's Bishop Bernt Eidsvig

The Catholic Church gets its first Bible in Norwegian
For the first time in history, the Norwegian Bible Society publishes an edition of the Bible that follows the Catholic canon.
- It has been a great loss for Catholics in Norway not to have a complete Bible, so we owe the Bible Society a big thank you for their goodwill and generosity in meeting this need, says Bishop Bernt Eidsvig.
That is, an edition that contains the so-called deuterocanonical books, in addition to all the books found in the Protestant Bibles. Moreover, these texts now appear in the traditional order of the Catholic Church.
- It is a great pleasure to publish the Bible together with the Catholic Church, says general secretary Øyvind Haraldseid .
- This is historic, both in terms of language history and the common Christian work. It is a bit sad that it has taken the Bible Society so long to publish this, admits Haraldseid.
The Deuterocanonical Scriptures
During the Reformation, the deuterocanonical writings, for various reasons, were not seen as equal to the other writings in the Old Testament. For example, Luther moved them from their usual places in the order of the text in his translation of the Bible in 1534. They were then placed together at the end of the Old Testament. This tradition was preserved in Denmark-Norway until 1891, when the deuterocanonical writings disappeared completely from Norwegian Bible editions.

Now we get, for the first time in Norwegian history, an edition where the entire Catholic canon appears in the Catholic Church's traditional order.

Available in both target forms

Catholic bishop in Trondheim and Tromsø, Erik Varden , shares Eidsvig's enthusiasm.
- This is magnificent, he says.
- It has been an expectation for a long time and a big project, and it is an achievement that it has now come true.
The fact that the Bible - Catholic canon is published in both standard forms is something the Catholic bishops are extra grateful for.
- When the deuterocanonical books were to be retranslated a few years ago, Dominican father Arnfinn Haram was one of the instigators for them to also be translated into Nynorsk. Unfortunately, he did not get to see that it came out in 2018, but that we are now even getting a New Norwegian Bible according to the Catholic canon is nothing more than a unique event in Catholic Norway, Bishop Eidsvig states.
Bible 2024
The Bible Society has been working for four years on a revision of its 2011 translation. The revised edition, Bibel 2024, will be launched in March 2024, and the Bible with the Catholic scriptures is one of several editions to be published on that occasion. In recent years, the Catholic Church has based its liturgical work on the Bible Society's 2011 translation, but on the occasion of the 2024 version will switch to using this.
