Pope Francis Accepts the Resignation of Poland's Archbishop Andrzej Dzięga after a Vos Estis Lux Mundi Investigation by the Vatican



On February 24, 2024, the Apostolic Nuncio of Poland, Archbishop Antonio Guido Filipazzi, announced that Archbishop Andrzej Dzięga, age 71, resigned. Bishop Zbigniew Zieliński has been appointed apostolic administrator of the archdiocese which is now "sede vacante." The archbishop had undergone a Vos estis lux mundi investigation by the Vatican after being accused of ignoring abuse in Poland. 
In a resignation letter, Archbishop Dziega wrote: "However, the last half a year has seen a radical weakening of my condition health. So in the fall it became obvious to me that it had come too time to step down from office. The Holy Father Francis agreed with mine requests and today the acceptance of my resignation was announced." He asked the faithful; "Also remember me in your prayers."
The nuncio posted: Pope Francis accepted the resignation of Archbishop Andrzej DZIĘGA from the service of Metropolitan Archbishop of Szczecin-Kamień.
He appointed the apostolic administrator of the Archdiocese of Szczecin-Kamień, sede vacante, in the person of the Bishop of Koszalin-Kołobrzeg, Zbigniew Zielinski, (age 59).

In a subsequent announcement, the nuncio wrote:
Responding to emerging questions, the Apostolic Nunciature published a communiqué regarding decisions related to the departure of Archbishop. Andrzej Dzięga from the office of the Metropolitan Archbishop of Szczecin-Kamień.
In response to emerging questions, the Apostolic Nunciature specifies that the decisions related to the departure of Archbishop Andrzej Dzięga from the office of the Metropolitan Archbishop of Szczecin-Kamień was taken as a result of an investigation conducted on behalf of the Holy See regarding the management of the diocese, and in particular the negligence referred to in the papal document Vos estis lux mundi .
