Pope Francis Accepts the Resignation of Spanish Cardinal José Luis Lacunza in Panama who went Missing


Pope Francis has accepted the resignation of Spanish Cardinal José Luis Lacunza who was found disoriented in his vehicle, 48 hours after disappearing.
At a Mass, the Cardinal apologized and said it was a (quote) “silly prank” that he did before his birthday.
Cardinal Lacunza will turn 80 on February 24, the Vatican did not comment on why he decided to resign. The new bishop of David will be Fr. Enrique Saldaña Guerra

The Holy Father has accepted the resignation from the pastoral care of the diocese of David, Panama, presented by His Eminence Cardinal José Luis Lacunza Maestrojuán, O.A.R.

The Holy Father has appointed the Reverend Fr. Luis Enrique Saldaña Guerra, O.F.M., until now provincial minister of the Franciscan Province of Nuestra Señora de Guadalupe of Central America and the Caribbean.

Curriculum vitae

Msgr. Luis Enrique Saldaña Guerra, O.F.M., was born on 24 February 1966 in David, Panama. After his studies in philosophy at the Universidad Rafael Landívar in Guatemala, and in theology at the Universidad Centroamericana José Simeón Cañas in El Salvador, he attended specialization courses for vocational promoters and formators. He gave his solemn vows on 23 February 2002, and was ordained a priest on 29 April 2006.

He has held the following offices: accompanier and formator of novices and Franciscan brethren; parish vicar; guardian of the Fraternity of the Parishes of San Juan Bautista in Boquete, Panama, Nuestra Señora del Carmen in David, Panama, and San Antonio de Padua in Miraflores, Panama; guardian of the Virgen del Socorro Fraternity in La Antigua, Guatemala; Franciscan provincial definitor of Panama (2008-2017); administrative director of the Franciscan schools of Pio XII in Boquete, Panama, and San Francisco de Asís in David, Panama, deputy director of the Obras Sociales del Santo Hermano Pedro in La Antigua, Guatemala; since 2021, provincial minister of the Franciscan province of Nuestra Señora de Guadalupe of Central America and the Caribbean, Guatemala.
