Catholic Bishops in France Support the Farmers in their Massive Protests

In separate messages, published on the official website of the Catholic Conference of Catholic Bishops of France, strong support was voiced for the protesting farmers in France.  Accroding to reports, the 2024 French farmer protest involves several protests and road blockages organized by agricultural unions since January 18, 2024. The farmers protested against low food prices, proposed reductions in state subsidies for farmers' diesel fuel, and a EU-Mercosur free trade agreement.

The Bishops of France wrote in messages :

"Let us therefore be proud of our roots, let us not be afraid to give farmers and their just demands the support they deserve, let us even dare to recall that a France without peasants would no longer be France, to defend our identity... And that God bless the work of the peasants of France!"

Pas-de-Calais: “May God open our hearts to hear this cry and know how to collectively respond to it! », asks Mgr Olivier Leborgne

With the whole Church, I know and defend the importance of a rapid and massive transition towards more environmentally friendly modes of production and consumption. A large majority of farmers have this concern. They are often the first victims of climate change, as evidenced by the recent floods experienced in Pas-de-Calais. They are committed to giving future generations a beautiful and generous land that they want to preserve. But their efforts are little recognized, they feel stigmatized by administrative controls which do not respect their professional dignity. Their current demands, expressed without violence and with dignity, are a legitimate call for all of society to support them.

“I have seen the distress of my people, I have heard their cry, I know their suffering.” These words from the Bible spoken by God before Moses, the shepherd who tended his flock, come to mind as I see the dismay, exasperation and despair of the farmers of our country. Many feel forgotten or abandoned. They aspire to fair consideration for their profession, to be able to live with dignity from their work.
