Vatican News released that admidst rising gang violence in Haiti, six Catholic religious brothers and a priest were kidnapped on February 23rd, in the Haitian capital Port-au-Prince, local Church sources said.
On the same day as the 6 brothers, a priest who had just celebrated Mass in the Chapel of Our Lady of Fatima, in the city’s Bicentenaire District, was also kidnapped.
The six brothers are from the Sacré Cœur congregation and a teacher kidnapped in Port-Au-Prince
No less than six religious from the congregation of the Brothers of the Sacred Heart and a teacher were kidnapped in Port-au-Prince this Friday. The news was confirmed by a person close to the Catholic Church in Haiti.
Port-au-Prince, February 23, 2024.- The Catholic Church in Haiti once again attacked by kidnapping. Religious people are increasingly becoming the preferred target of criminals.
Thus, six brothers and a teacher were kidnapped this Friday in the city center. The kidnapping occurred as they were heading towards the Jean XXlll school (23), at the Bicentenaire.
A few weeks ago, nuns were kidnapped in Port-au-Prince and then released for ransom.
Injured Bishop Pierre-André Dumas', who was injured in an explosion, heath conditions improving. On 28 January, the explosion occurred that injured Bishop Pierre-André Dumas of Anse-à-Veau-Miragoâne who serves as vice-president of the Haitian Bishops Conference in a house where he was staying during a visit to Port-au-Prince. The prelate has undergone surgery and his health conditions are now improving, local Church sources reported, adding that he is now expected to be transferred to a hospital in Miami, Florida.
