Over 12 million pilgrims came to the shrine of Our Lady of Guadalupe during the month of December.
Many of the pilgrims had walked from remote villages to the shrine at the foot of the Tepeyac apparition hill, sometimes on foot for days or weeks. Our Lady of Guadalupe Shrine in Mexico is the most attended pilgrimage site for Catholics in the world.
The pilgrimage festival of the Virgin of Guadalupe ended in Mexico City on Wednesday without any major incidents. Sadly, 2 pilgrims died on their way home, on December 11th when a suspected drunk truck driver drove into a group of motorcycle and bicycle pilgrims from the town of Acatzingo.
According to the portal eluniversal.com.mx, more than 12 million pilgrims have come to the shrine where the miraculous image of the Mexican Mother of God hangs since the beginning of December.

At the same time, Aguiar encouraged all those arriving to “not only greet the Blessed Mother, who is present in her miraculous image, but also to communicate with her and thereby experience consolation and help.” The patron saint, known as “Morenita” (“dark-skinned”), shows everyone “that they are not abandoned by God.” Pope Francis also commented on the Virgin of Guadalupe in an interview with the television station Televisa on the occasion of the feast day. "The Mexican people deserve to have a mother," he said, when journalist Valentina Alazraki asked him the country. Blessed Mary knows "how to accompany her children - when they behave badly, she remains silent but continues to accompany them," said the Pope.
As the authorities announced on December 13th (local time), 300,000 pilgrims have used the city administration's public services; Water, hot drinks, food and blankets were made available, information was provided in numerous languages ​​- including indigenous ones - and minor medical procedures such as foot treatments were carried out on 3,760 people. As part of the “Bienvenido peregrino” (Welcome, Pilgrims) campaign, supported by thousands of volunteers, more than 22,300 officers were deployed to ensure the peaceful conduct of the largest Catholic pilgrimage festival.
A serious accident occurred on December 11th when a suspected drunk truck driver drove into a group of motorcycle and bicycle pilgrims from the town of Acatzingo who were already on their way home along the highway between Mexico City and Puebla used. At least two pilgrims died and several others were injured.
