The Cathedral of Notre-Dame, in Paris, France, which suffered a devastating fire in 2019 is set to open in one year. One year before the reopening to the public of Notre-Dame scheduled for December 8, 2024, the structure is undergoing an extraordinary reconstruction. On Wednesday December 6, the cross of the spire was installed, a sign of the progress of the restoration work on the cathedral which is gradually regaining its silhouette
On the square in front of Notre-Dame de Paris Cathedral, tourists were present this week to observe great progress on the construction site. France's President Emmanuel Macron visited the site on Friday December 8, exactly one year before the planned reopening to worship and the public.
Started in April 2023, its reconstruction continued throughout the year before reaching its final size this week: 96 meters in height. Its cross was even affixed to the summit on December 6, before the upcoming installation of a new rooster.
The site counts on nearly 500 companions, craftsmen and supervisors who work every day on site, and as many in the region . Carpenters, masons, sculptors, dozens of trades come together.
Certain elements that make up the cathedral still need to be completed, such as the large organ made up of 8,000 pipes. At the same time, sculptors restore statues, chimeras, gargoyles and other decorative elements.
Although the reopening of the site is planned for December 8, 2024, numerous works are still planned, in particular the restoration of the flying buttresses of the nave and the choir. The project will not be fully completed until the end of the decade , in 2029-2030, according to the Élysée.
