Catholics Need to Attend 2 Masses this Weekend - How to Fulfill Your Holy Mass Obligation for Sunday and Christmas in 2023 an Easy Guide to Share!




For all Catholics out there, this is the shortest Advent season we can possibly have. It’s only three weeks long because the Fourth Sunday of Advent is December 24th. There’s an obligation for Sunday and an obligation for Christmas. A Dominican Catholic priest shared the graphic above. In other words, Catholics need to attend 2 Masses this long weekend (including Monday) to fulfill their obligation)Christmas Day (Dec. 25), the Birthday of Jesus, is a holy day of obligation. This year, we have two obligations to fulfill: one obligation for Sunday, Dec. 24, the Fourth Sunday of Advent, and one for Monday, Dec. 25, Christmas Day. This can be fulfilled In a number of ways. 1) Saturday evening AND Sunday evening, Midnight, or Monday during the day. 2) Sunday morning AND Sunday evening, at night (or Midnight Mass), or Monday during the day. 3) Sunday evening or any night Mass before Midnight AND any Midnight Mass or Monday Mass. While it may sound confusing, it’s not that difficult. Simply put, we have an obligation for Sunday, and we have an obligation for Christmas. Two obligations means two Masses. That’s just the way it is. As my mother asked me, “You mean, we gotta go to church twice?” Exactly. One Mass cannot fulfill two obligations.
