The kidnapping of priests and religious people in Nigeria has been occurring for several years. It is part of a broader phenomenon of kidnappings which target, among others, foreigners, businessmen, politicians, government officials, diplomats and traditional rulers, but also ordinary citizens including students and schoolchildren, often victims of mass kidnappings, to the point that there is talk of a real "kidnapping industry" . Kidnappings are committed by common criminals, by terrorist groups such as Boko Haram or by gangs of Fulani herdsmen.
