Chicagoland Native Jim Irsay Makes $5 Million Gift to Catholic Charities Chicago in Memory of Sister Joyce Dura, O.S.F.
Chicagoland native Jim Irsay, Owner & CEO of the Indianapolis Colts, today announced a $5 million gift to Catholic Charities of the Archdiocese of Chicago (CCAC) to honor the legacy of his late cousin, Sister Joyce Dura, O.S.F. of Chicago. Irsay previously supported CCAC’s Spirit of St. Nicholas Ball in 2022 with a $500,000 donation.

CCAC will use this transformative gift to provide critical, sustained support for a wide array of programs and services for those in need, particularly those dealing with food insecurity.

As such, the supper program at CCAC headquarters at 721 N. LaSalle St. will be known as the Sister Joyce Dura, O.S.F., Supper Program through 2033. CCAC welcomes those in need five nights a week and serves more than 350,000 meals each year. Community meals are a cornerstone program for CCAC, offering a hot meal, fellowship and access to many other essential support services.

“Although family and football has taken me to great cities like Baltimore and Indianapolis, I cherish my childhood in Chicago and the wonderful people who make Chicago the great city that it is,” said Irsay, who himself was born in Lincolnwood, Ill. “Sister Joyce spent a half century giving back to others, so with this gift I only hope to emulate my dear cousin’s spirit, grace and her commitment to our communities.”

Born in Chicago in 1942, Sister Joyce was a member of The Sisters of the Third Order of St. Francis, entering the convent in 1965. Throughout her nearly 50 years in religious life, she devoted her service to several medical centers in Illinois in a variety of roles including nursing, social service and pastoral care. She was known for her great compassion and the comfort she brought to countless patients and families.
“To be a Christian is not easy,” Sister Joyce once commented on being called to serve others, “but the joys of sharing Christ with others in this world is very rewarding and a hundred-fold more rewarding in the life to come.”“We are delighted and honored by the Irsay family’s generosity to us,” said Sally Blount, Catholic Charities Chicago President & CEO. “Jim and his family’s compassion for those we accompany and serve combined with their vision for honoring his cousin, Sister Joyce Dura, and her life’s mission – it’s all quite extraordinary.”
