Pope Francis meets with President Katalin Novák of Hungary at the Vatican. They discussed the war in Ukraine, family and Christian values, and religious freedom and persecution.  Pope Francis' exchanged gifts,  with the President of the Republic of Hungary, Ms. Katalin Novák, in the Vatican on August 25th. These included a box of Hungarian-made items including wines to be used at Mass. The gifts also featured an album of photos from the Pope's trip to Hungary a few months ago.


The Holy See Press Office statement explained that the discussions were cordial, recalling the Pope’s Apostolic Journey to Hungary, 28-30 April 2023, and "topics of common interest, such as the family and Christian values."
"The conversation," the statement noted, "proceeded with a focus on the war in Ukraine, with special reference to the humanitarian situation and efforts to end the conflict."
Religious freedom and the situation of persecuted Christians in the world were also discussed.
After her time with the Holy Father, the Hungarian President met with Vatican Secretary of State, Cardinal Pietro Parolin, accompanied by Under-Secretary for Relations with States, Msgr. Mirosław Wachowski.
