Pope Francis Appoints a New Pontifical Delegate to Resolve the Syro-Malabar Situation



Pope Francis names Archbishop Cyril Vasil’, SJ, as Pontifical Delegate to ensure the implementation of the liturgical reform approved for the Syro-Malabar Church.
Pope Francis has appointed Archbishop Cyril Vasil’, SJ, as Pontifical Delegate with special faculties “to resolve the situation of the Archeparchy of Ernakulam-Angamaly of the Syro-Malabars”.

His task will be to “ensure the implementation of the liturgical reform approved by the Synod of the Syro-Malabar Archiepiscopal Church.”
The appointment was conceded to the Prefect of the Dicastery of the Eastern Churches, Archbishop Claudio Gugerotti, on 23 June, according to a communiqué issued by the Dicastery on Thursday.

The statement notes that Archbishop Vasil’ began his mission upon his arrival in India on 4 August.
