A Historic Church in Germany is Destroyed by Fire - Police Arrest a Suspect - VIDEO



An evangelical baroque church, almost 300 year-old, Großröhrsdorf, was completely destroyed by arson.

The baroque town church of Großröhrsdorf (Saxony) was completely destroyed in a fire on July 4th, the roof structure and church tower collapsed, the interior was burned. According to the Görlitz police department, it is arson, reports the MDR. In the meantime, a 40-year-old man with German nationality known to the police has been arrested.

The magistrate issued an arrest warrant against him and he was transferred to a correctional facility. Apparently the man confessed to his crime during interrogation. Police will release more details on Monday. The church building burned down to the ground, see video above.

On Monday, the police headquarters in Görlitz gave a press conference right in front of the burned-out church ruins. Criminal director Raik Schulze said the alleged lone culprit was a 40-year-old man from the area. The father of the family is accused of serious arson, he has confessed and is in custody. This was reported by the MDR. The suspect is currently in a “personally difficult life situation”. According to the MDR, the spokesman for the Görlitz public prosecutor's office, Peter Terres, said that there had been "disputes" between the suspect and the church, but he could not provide any more precise information at the moment. The Görlitzer Kripo had previously investigated the suspect for negligent arson.
