Cardinal Newman Society Launches Newman Guide Recognition for K-12 Schools and Graduate Programs

The Cardinal Newman Society is expanding its highly successful Newman Guide—which for 16 years has recognized faithful Catholic colleges in the U.S. and abroad—to include faithful Catholic elementary, secondary, and graduate school options for Catholic families. The Newman Guide helps Catholic parents and students find faithfully Catholic education, and it recognizes model institutions that refuse to compromise their Catholic mission. Too many of America’s schools and colleges—including much of Catholic education—have become battlegrounds for today’s culture wars, causing as many as 85 percent of Catholic youth to lose their faith by adulthood..
“By extending the Newman Guide into K-12 schools and graduate programs, we are providing Catholic parents and students with a pathway to a seamless, faithful Catholic education,” said Kelly Salomon, vice president of Newman Guide programs at The Cardinal Newman Society. Over the years, The Newman Guide has earned a trusted reputation for rigorously vetting Catholic colleges, ensuring they have strong policies and standards that uphold Catholic identity from academics and athletics to faculty hiring and campus life. This has resonated with Catholic families, as more than 75,000 families refer to the Newman Guide online every year to help find a faithful Catholic college.
Catholic Schools
Now, parents can do the same with Catholic elementary and secondary schools. The Newman Guide will also be a powerful tool for Catholic school superintendents and principals, as they strive to continually strengthen their Catholic identity and differentiate themselves from other school options. “We are thrilled that The Cardinal Newman Society is expanding The Newman Guide to include primary and secondary Catholic schools,” said Derek Tremblay, headmaster of Mount Royal Academy in Sunapee, N.H. “The Cardinal Newman Society remains a critical and trusted partner in Catholic education. The policies and curriculum standards they have drafted reflect the fullness of the Catholic faith. There is simply no other institution that compares to what they have done to keep Catholic education faithful to Jesus Christ.”
In many ways, it’s an exciting time in Catholic education, with many Catholic schools strengthening their Catholic identity and curriculum, while new, lay-run Catholic schools are emerging. But there are also serious problems in Catholic education today, causing on average 92 Catholic schools, mostly parochial, to close every year since 1972. Reasons for the decline vary, but secularization is certainly a top concern. The Newman Guide helps spur the courageous renewal needed across Catholic education.
The first cohort of recognized schools is now available at NewmanGuide.org and will be updated throughout 2023. Schools can apply for recognition at this link. Graduate Programs
At the graduate level, the expansion of The Newman Guide is a response to an ever-pressing need. For years, Catholic families have asked The Cardinal Newman Society for guidance in choosing a Catholic graduate program. Moreover, total student enrollment in U.S. graduate programs has doubled in the last 20 years.
“In the right graduate program, students can pursue an advanced education while being immersed in a truly Catholic environment. This is great news for Catholic families and for the future of the Church,” said Salomon.
The graduate program application is now open and several programs are working through the application process. Graduate programs that are interested in applying for The Newman Guide can email NewmanGuide@CardinalNewmanSociety.org.
