Saintly Surfer Guido Schäffer - Known as the "Angel of Surfers" in Brazil - is on the Path to Canonization


Guido Schäffer, a Physician and Seminarian, Surferwho drowned while surfing at the age of 34, is on the path to Sainthood.

The doctor and theology student Guido Schäffer (1974-2009), known in Brazil as the "Angel of the Surfers", is to be beatified soon. The Vatican press office announced on May 20th that Pope Francis has recognized the "heroic virtues" of the Brazilian who drowned while surfing at the age of 34.
Raised in Copacabana, Schäffer was an avid surfer and a devout seminarian.

As a doctor, he helped drug addicts and the homeless in a facility run by the "Missionaries of Charity" free of charge. In 2008 he entered the seminary to become a Catholic priest. On May 1, 2009 he died in a surfing accident in the Atlantic.
According to Brazilian media reports, more than 1,500 people attended his funeral service, which was celebrated by the Archbishop of Rio de Janeiro, Orani Joao Tempesta. After his burial there were first reports of miraculous healings, which are said to have happened through his intercession. In 2015, Archbishop Tempesta began the beatification process for the man revered as the "Angel of Surfers".
