Bishop Rolando Álvarez is sentenced to 26 years in prison. The government of Daniel Ortega sentenced the Bishop of Matagalpa, Rolando Álvarez, to 26 years in prison and withdrew his Nicaraguan nationality.
Monsignor Alvarez refused to be exiled from Nicaragua and board the plane to the USA with the other political prisoners. Then the government of Daniel Ortega sentenced the Bishop of Matagalpa, to 26 years and four months in prison for "treason" and "propagation of false news" among others, in addition to disqualifying him "perpetually" from holding charges of popular election, and in addition to withdrawing his Nicaraguan nationality.
222 political prisoners were expelled from the country and received in the United States. Last year the government shut down Catholic media stations. They also expelled the Apostolic Nuncio to Nicaragua, Polish Archbishop Waldemar Stanislaw Sommertag and the Missionaries of Charity of St. Mother Teresa from the country. The Bishop decided to stay in solidarity with his people. The Catholic Church of Nicaragua asks for prayers for Monsignor Álvarez.
On February 6th the President of the Catholic Commission of the Bishops’ Conferences of the European Union (COMECE), Cardinal Jean-Claude Hollerich, issued a statement calling for the release of the detainees.
Magistrate Octavio Rothschuh, president of the Criminal Chamber One of the Tribunal de Apelaciones de Managua (TAM), read the sentence against Monsignor Álvarez on national television.
When reading the sentence, Rothschuh explained that the Bishop is considered a traitor to the country and guilty, as a co-perpetrator, of the crimes of undermining national integrity, propagation of false news through information and communication technologies, obstruction of functions, aggravated disobedience or contempt of authority, all committed in real competition and to the detriment of Nicaraguan society and the State of Nicaragua. He is set to be imprisoned until April 2049.
"The sentences will be served successively, for which he must serve 26 years and four months in prison," Rothschuh Andino summarized, the sentence's completion will be April 13, 2049.
"Without prejudice to the fact that the calculation can be reformed if an error is found or new circumstances that make it necessary, which will be the responsibility of the Court of Competition and Penitentiary Surveillance of the Managua district," he concluded.
