Pope Francis with King Abdullah bin Al Hussein of Jordan at the Vatican Discussing "the need to protect and encourage the Christian presence in the Middle East" - VIDEO


His Holiness Pope Francis received Jordan's King Abdullah bin Al Hussein at 10:30 am on November 10th at the Apostolic Palace in the Vatican. Following the meeting, a statement was issued by the Holy See's Press House, stating that the Pope received His Majesty King Abdullah II, who later met with the Vatican's Secretary of State, Cardinal Pietro Parolin, and the Secretary of State for Relations with States and International Organizations, Archbishop Paul Richard Gallagher.

 

During the cordial talks in the State Secretariat, and in expressing appreciation for the existing good bilateral relations, the need to continue to develop interreligious and ecumenical dialogue was noted, with the guarantee that the Catholic Church in Jordan would always be able to freely exercise its mission.

In conclusion, and while noting the importance of promoting stability and peace in the Middle East, with particular reference to the Palestinian cause and the refugee issue, the need to protect and encourage the Christian presence in the region was emphasized. In this regard, the need to continue to maintain the status quo in the holy places in Jerusalem, the place of meeting and the symbol of peaceful coexistence, where mutual respect and dialogue are promoted, was emphasized.
