Saintly Giovanni Battista Scalabrini a Bishop who Promoted Eucharistic Adoration and Marian Devotion who will soon be Canonized
One of 2 Blesseds approved for Canonization on August 27th, 2022, at the Vatican consistory. They will be canonized on October 9th, 2022 (also Bl. Artemide Zatti). His feast day is June 1st.
Giovanni Battista Scalabrini was born in Fino Mornasco (Como, Italy) on July 8, 1839. He entered the seminary in 1857, he received priestly ordination on May 30, 1863. After having held the positions of rector and teacher in the minor seminary of Como, in 1870 he was appointed parish priest of San Bartolomeo in the same city. At the age of 36, on 12 December 1875, he received the appointment of bishop of Piacenza, and on 30 January 1876, he was consecrated in Rome, in the chapel of Propaganda Fide.. For 29 years he carried out an intense apostolate in the Piacenza diocese: he made five pastoral visits, called and celebrated three diocesan synods, increased and renewed formation and studies in the three seminaries of his diocese, exercised the ministry of the word and teaching with great fruit. of catechism, he took particular care of the liturgy and liturgical chant, promoted Eucharistic worship and Marian devotion. His concerns include the apostolate of the good press with the foundation of a diocesan newspaper, assistance to the poor and the elderly, without neglecting socially disadvantaged categories, such as the deaf and mute and the mute.
Impressed, already in the period in which he was parish priest of San Bartolomeo in Como, of the dramatic conditions of the first mass migrations to the Americas, especially the United States and Brazil, the Blessed undertook to make the ecclesiastical and state authorities aware of this and to sensitize the public opinion. In order to assist and protect migrants, he founded the Congregation of the Missionaries of San Carlo Borromeo in 1887. Always in favor of migrants he carried out an intense activity with conferences and publications and, in 1905, by the Congregation of the Missionaries of San Carlo Borromeo. In the last years of his life he personally visited emigrants and his missionaries in the United States and Brazil. He was proclaimed Blessed by St. John Paul II, in St. Peter's Square, on November 9, 1997.

On 7 October 2021, the Postulation of the Congregation of the Missionaries of San Carlo asked the Pope to proceed with the canonization of Blessed Giovanni Battista Scalabrini. The same request was presented on January 28, 2022 by the Superiors General of the three Congregations he founded or inspired by him, in the certainty that the Blessed could above all be pointed out to migrants as their patron. Subsequently, other postulatory letters were added by Cardinals, Bishops, Episcopal Conferences and Superiors General. Many of these requests come from prelates of nations that have been subject to immigration in the past centuries, with full knowledge of the real problems connected to it, but also with the awareness of the particular wealth of human and cultural resources constituted by immigrants (United States, Canada, Brazil ,
Subsequently, the Positio super canonizatione was prepared with the aim of demonstrating not only the continuity and increase of the cult paid to Blessed Scalabrini, but also the driving force of his example and the importance of his protection and intercession for the solution of human and social problems linked to the complex phenomenon of emigration.
Ordinary Session of Cardinals and Bishops
The Ordinary Session of Cardinals and Bishops met on May 17, 2022 with an affirmative outcome (11 out of 11), regarding the appropriateness of the canonization of Blessed Scalabrini. The cardinals and bishops emphasized the relevance of Blessed Scalabrini's message, in particular with reference to the migration issue. He was convinced of the need for institutions to accompany the journey of migrants in all its stages, taking care not to abruptly cut cultural ties with the motherland, keeping the mother tongue as a bond of unity with other compatriots. Furthermore, Blessed Scalabrini believed that migration can be a safety valve for managing the imbalance between countries of origin and destination.
