Cathedral in Seville Announces Beatification of 27 New Martyrs Including a Nun, Layman and Dominicans on the Path to Sainthood

Press release: Seville Cathedral will host the beatification of 27 Dominican martyrs
The Cathedral of Seville will host the beatification of 27 Dominican martyrs on Saturday, June 18, 2022 at eleven in the morning. The celebration will be presided over by Cardinal Marcello Semeraro, prefect of the Congregation for the Causes of Saints.. He will be accompanied by Monsignor José Ángel Saiz , Archbishop of Seville, and Br. Gerard Timoner , OP, Master General of the Order of Preachers.
The beatification was approved by Pope Francis in December 2019 and due to the pandemic it was delayed until the middle of this year. On June 18, the twenty-seven Dominicans who were murdered for their faith between the summer of 1936 and the beginning of 1937 will be proclaimed Blessed of the Catholic Church.
Among the 27 martyrs are friar priests, cooperator brothers, students, a nun and a layman.
20 friars from the convent of Almagro
Twenty of them were friars from the Asunción de Almagro convent. After being expelled from the convent and held in a house, they were martyred in Almagro and in nearby towns between July and August 1936. Their remains will be transferred to Seville where they will be worshiped in the church of Santo Tomás. The Dominicans of Spain have launched a web page with all the information on the canonization and the life of the future blessed.
The Order of Preachers (Dominicans) currently has, with its more than 800 years of history, around 300 beatified members, to which will be added these 27 martyrs, who are a model of life for Catholics, signs of love, of forgiveness and peace.
