Pope Francis Names Auxiliary Bishop of Detroit

Pope Francis has appointed the Most Reverend Paul F. Russell as auxiliary bishop of Detroit. He is the titular archbishop of Novi. The appointment was publicized in Washington, D.C. on May 23, 2022, by Archbishop Christophe Pierre, apostolic nuncio to the United States.

In 2016, the Holy Father appointed the Rev. Mons. Paul Fitzpatrick Russell, Councilor of the Nunciature as apostolic nuncio to Turkey and Turkmenistan, at the same time elevating him to the titular see of Novi, with the dignity of archbishop.  

Rev. Msgr. Paul Fitzpatrick Russell Rev. Msgr. Paul Fitzpatrick Russell was born in Greenfield (United States of America) on May 2, 1959. He was ordained a priest on June 20, 1987, becoming incardinated in the Archdiocese of Boston. He has a degree in Canon Law. He entered the diplomatic service of the Holy See on 1 July 1997, he worked in the General Affairs Section of the Secretariat of State and in the Pontifical Representations in Ethiopia, Turkey, Switzerland, Nigeria and China. He knows the following languages: English, French, Italian, Spanish and German.

He entered the Holy See diplomatic service on 1 July 1997, and served in the Section of General Affairs of the Secretariat of State and in the Pontifical Representations in Ethiopia, Turkey, Switzerland, Nigeria and China. On 19 March 2016 he was appointed titular archbishop of Novi and apostolic nuncio in Turkey and Turkmenistan, and received episcopal consecration the following 3 June. On 7 April 2018 he was appointed as apostolic nuncio also in Azerbaijan.

The Archdiocese of Detroit is comprised of 3,901 square miles in the State of Michigan and has a total population of 4,278,248, of which 1,131,660 are Catholic.
