Press Release of the Dicastery for Promoting Integral Human Development, 04.10.2021

Aid from the Holy Father to the affected populations

the floods in South Sudan and the fires in Greece

Following the heavy rains and devastating floods that hit South Sudan last August, causing over 12,000 displaced people, with about 6,000 homes damaged or destroyed and extensive material damage, Pope Francis, through the Dicastery for Promoting Integral Human Development , has decided to send US $ 75,000 as a contribution to emergency activities and livelihood programs for the population in the hard-hit Diocese of Malakal.

The Holy Father also arranged to send an initial contribution of € 50,000 in support of the populations in Greece who, again in August, suffered serious losses due to the fires that broke out on the island of Evia, in the Attica peninsula and in the Region. of the Peloponnese, destroying over 100,000 hectares of land, fields and crops. This sum will be allocated to the activities promoted in the area by Caritas Hellas .

The contributions sent want to express the feeling of spiritual closeness and paternal encouragement on the part of Pope Francis towards the people and territories affected. They accompany prayer and are part of the aids that are being activated throughout the Catholic Church, which also involve numerous charitable organizations.
