Press release of the Holy See Press Office, 22.09.2021
Yesterday afternoon, at 4.00 pm, the Council of Cardinals met online. Their Eminences the Cardinals Óscar A. Rodríguez Maradiaga, SDB, Reinhard Marx, Sean Patrick O'Malley, OFM Cap., Oswald Gracias and Fridolin Ambongo Besungu, OFM Cap., Were connected by the countries of residence, while the Vatican was connected to the their Eminences Cardinal Pietro Parolin and Giuseppe Bertello, and the Secretary of the Council, HE Mons. Marco Mellino. The Holy Father connected from Casa Santa Marta to follow the works.
After a brief introduction to the work of His Eminence Cardinal Maradiaga, Pope Francis offered a reflection on the opening of the work of the next Synod on synodality.
After reviewing two of his interventions identified as central to his thinking on the next Synod, that of 2015 for the 50th anniversary of the establishment of the Synod of Bishops and the more recent one addressed to the faithful of the Diocese of Rome last Saturday, the Pope clarified how at the heart of the reflection is not so much the deepening of this or that theme as the learning of a way of living the Church, marked at all levels by mutual listening and a pastoral attitude, particularly in the face of the temptations of clericalism and stiffness.
The interventions of the various cardinals explored some aspects that make the synodal journey particularly necessary in the lands from which they come, in order to overcome sectarianisms and partisan interests.
The meeting ended before 18.00, updating to the next appointment, scheduled for the month of December, which will take place, if conditions permit, in presence.
