The fire started at 2 a.m. inside the rectory of St. John's Church on School Street. Father Jeremy St. Martin was taken to a hospital to be treated for burns. Fire officials said he tried to extinguish the flames. He was treated and released.
“He heard the smoke detectors going off, came downstairs discovered the fire tried and to put it out with a fire extinguisher,” Townsend Fire Department Chief Mark Boynton said.
The fire quickly grew out of control and destroyed the building, which is more than 100 years old.
“I’m happy that everyone is OK, but I’m heartbroken for the building and the memories,” Sue Dye said.
The fire did not damage the church. The cause of the fire remains under investigation. Edited from https://www.wcvb.com/
