The Catholic Church of Pakistan has called on Christians to refrain from making negative comments about Islam on social media.
The Islamic parties demonstrated for three days, following the ruling Supreme Court that ordered the release of the Asia. Protesters blocked road intersections, set fire to vehicles, attacked journalists and photographers.
"I am requesting the prime minister of the UK and the president of US to help us in Pakistan. We are in trouble. It has been 10 years since I have been struggling with Joseph Nadeem (Executive Director Renaissance Education Foundation). Please help both families. We will be thankful for this kindness, looking forward to shift us to a safe place,” he said.
For Farooq Tariq, general secretary of the left-leaning Labour Party, the agreement between radicals and the government is a disgrace. Initially, Prime Minister Imran Khan had appeared willing to resist the radicals’ pressures.
“The initiation of legal process to place Asia Bibi's name on the exit control list (ECL) is a worrisome U turn, a typical move by Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf government,” he said.
“This agreement is a victory of religious fundamentalists. This is a new form of fascism which is overtaking the society. This is worrisome for progressive forces and needs a new, fresh and solid diplomacy.”Asia Bibi, herself, wrote a letter to a minister in Spain asking for asylum. Letter by Asia Bibi to Minister in Spain:
Minister of Foreign Affairs and Cooperation H.E. Mr. Josep Borrell Fontelles Madrid
Minister of the Interior H. E. Mr. Fernando Grande-Marlaska Gómez Madrid
Dear Minister:
I am Asia Bibi and I am writing to express my wholehearted gratitude for the actions you have taken in relation to my case, of which I have heard from my friends of the HazteOir.org association.
I also write to respectfully ask for asylum in Spain.
I am writing from prison, in Pakistan, where I am waiting for the visas that my family and myself need to exit Pakistan. As you may know, my country’s Supreme Court has acquitted me and overturned my death sentence.
I had been convicted to the capital punishment under the blasphemy law and I exhausted all the possible judicial appeals. The Supreme Court’s October 31 decision is final.
My situation, as well as that of my family and the family that is assisting me in Pakistan, is critical: all of us are threatened with death, there is a price on my head, demonstrations to ask for my execution have taken place all over Pakistan.
Dear Minister, since the ruling is favourable, we have to flee Pakistan as soon as possible. Can your country be of assistance by sheltering me and my companions?
In the case Spain agrees to grant us asylum, the HazteOir.org association is committed to be fully responsible for my family and the family assisting me in Pakistan.
All of them have their passports in order, except for me, due to the fact that I have been imprisoned for the past eight years. I have attached their passports to this letter.
Thank you very much for your attention, Sir.
Yours faithfully,
Asia Bibi
