Pope Francis invites 21 Syrian refugees to the Casa Santa Marta at the Vatican on Thursday, August 11, 2016.
The Holy Father received a book with the drawings of the children. The Pope presented them with toys and gifts.
The refugees live in Rome and stay with the St. Egidio Community. They came to Rome from the Greek Island Lesbos by Pope Francis after his visit on the 16th April 2016.
The Holy Father took some of them with him on the papal plane, and another group came to Rome in mid-June. Some other people joined the Pope and the refugees for lunch including the Substitute Secretary of State Archbishop Angelo Becciu; Professor Andrea Riccardi, founder of the St. Egidio Community, and some members of the community; the Commander of the Vatican Gendarmerie, Doctor Domenico Giani; and two Gendarmerie that helped bring the refugees to Italy.
