Nigerian President-elect Muhammadu Buhari, has been voted in the country's democratic elections. He is a 72-year-old former military general.
On Tuesday, Buhari defeated President Goodluck Jonathan. Buhari was placed ahead of Jonathan by over 2 million votes.
Nigeria gained independence from Britain in 1960, then the country had a bloody civil war and a military authority. Buhari ruled Nigeria for just 20 months and was subsequently jailed for 40 months. In 1999, Nigeria regained civilian rule. Buhari a former dictator calls himself a "converted democrat."
Nigeria is Africa's most populated country, Buhari is from the Muslim-majority north, while Jonathan is from the Christian south. There are 36 states in Nigeria. Buhari has a Christian running partner, and Jonathan has a Muslim. Buhari denounced Boko Haram as "misguided persons masquerading as adherents of Islam." Buhari has vowed to eliminate the Boko Haram extremist group.
