Pope Francis Arrives in Bethlehem and meets President

(Vatican Radio)  Pope Francis is in Bethlehem this Sunday morning where he has met Palestinian president Mahmoud Abbas and local political, religious and civic leaders.  The Pope arrived in Bethlehem by helicopter from Jordan which he visited Saturday, the first stop on his three day pilgrimage to the Holy Land.  After celebrating mass in Manger Square outside Bethlehem’s Church of the Nativity Sunday morning, the Holy Father will pray at the site of Jesus’ birth and visit  Palestinian refugees. 
Later, Pope Francis will travel to Israel where he will be greeted by Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and President Shimon Peres before making his way to Jerusalem for an ecumenical meeting with Orthodox Patriarch Bartholomew I of Constantinople.  The two church leaders will celebrate the fiftieth anniversary of the historic 1964 meeting in Jerusalem of their predecessors, Pope Paul VI and Patriarch Athanagorus.
