- A recent documentary has shown the life of the Stylite Monk Maxime Qavtaradze. He lives in Georgia in Europe. This 59 year old monk lives on a stone rock that one can only reach with a 131 foot ladder.
- It is called the Katskhi Pillar - monks last lived here in the 1400s.
The stylite way of living began in 423 with St. Simeon the Elder who lived on a pillar in Syria.
This monk Qavtaradze climbs down the ladder once or twice a week to counsel troubled men who ask for his help. Qavtaradze was also once a trouble youth who took drugs.
In 1993 he took monastic vows and has tried to rebuild the delapidated monastery and chapel on top of the pillar.
