ARCHDIOCESE OF MELBOURNE RELEASE
Kingsbury painting
Kairos Volume 24, Issue 11
AN Indigenous religious work by artist Simon Harradine was recently commissioned for Our Lady of the Way Church in Kingsbury.
Pictured (right), parish priest Fr Terry Bergin watches as Simon, of Thornbury, puts the last touches to the acrylic work, which will be hung in the church and is yet untitled.
Simon says the symbolism of the large painting’s message is ‘the universe created by the Father bears fruit for us on our journey towards a better life through Jesus and Mary’.
The blue in the painting represents the sky; the fruitful vine is food for our journey; white dots represent stars in the universe; the parallel wavy lines are the roads we travel; black hands represent God; the Cross represents Christian spirituality; and the circle in the centre is the Church.
Simon, a member of the Latji Latji tribe, is not only a skilled artist, but also an Indigenous musician, wood carver and jackaroo.
