More than $112,000 was raised in the largest-ever World Youth Day fundraiser to be held by the Archdiocese of Sydney's Catholic Education office.
"This is a wonderful result and will help us to send 300 students from Catholic schools across Sydney to WYD in Rio de Janeiro in July," says Dr Dan White, Director of Schools for the Archdiocese.
The record amount was raised by selling 54,000 raffle tickets in a lottery that offered a series of outstanding prizes, including a first prize of a brand new Kia Rio-three door hatch back car valued at more than $15,500.
David Jackson of Caringbah was over the moon when he discovered he had won the stylish 2012 Kia Rio and admitted although he had bought 50 tickets in the raffle, he had not expected to win.

"Buying the tickets was really just the chance for us to give something back to the community," he says adding that he and his wife Francesca's decision to participate in the raffle was also a result of his daughter Olivia who is hoping to go to Brazil this year with her friends for WYD in Rio.
Olivia, a Year 10 student at Our Lady of Mercy College, Burraneer hopes the sale of tickets will help fund expenses for herself and other students from Sydney's Catholic schools who plan to be at Rio in July this year for what will probably be the biggest-ever WYD gathering of the world's young pilgrims.
The $112,000 raised will also help contribute to the cost of their accommodation as well as the mission works undertaken by pilgrims to this year's WYD to be held from 23 to 28 July.
More than 4 million are expected to attend WYD in Rio which marks only the second time a gathering of the world's youthful pilgrims has been held in South America. The only other WYD to be held in Latin America took place in 1987, almost 27 years ago, in Buenos Aires, Argentina.
Among the other winners of CEO's WYD fundraiser was Sam Sammut who took out second prize of two return flights to Europe on Emirate Airlines, courtesy of Harvest INROADS. Third place winner who received a Visa gift card valued at $1000 was Jacinta Werger of Sutherland.
Bishop Peter Comensoli, Auxiliary Bishop with the Sydney Archdiocese drew the winning prize of a car from the thousands of entries at a special ceremony held at the CEO Leichardt Offices in Sydney.
