NAIROBI, October 30, 2012 (CISA) -A Catholic Bishop has urged Christians to pray for a peaceful General Election which is scheduled for March 4, 2013.
The Rt Rev Salesius Mugambi of Meru Diocese and Chairman of the Bishops’ National Office of Family Life also urged the Christians to pray for improved security in the country.
The Bishop, now-in-charge of chaplaincy within the country’s Uniformed Disciplined Services said this on Sunday, October 28 at Nairobi’s Holy family Minor Basilica, while presiding over Mass to mark this year’s Joint prayer and thanks giving Service.
The annual joint service is dedicated to disciplined service officers and their families within the six services, namely: The Kenya Police, Administration Police, Kenya Prisons, Kenya Wildlife, Kenya Forest and National Youth.
The theme for this year’s joint prayer/thanksgiving service was: That they may all be one, John 17:2.
Bishop Mugambi has replaced The Rt Rev Philip Anyolo, the Bishop for the Diocese of Homa Bay, who is now the Vice Chairman of the Kenya Episcopal Conference.
The Bishop urged the disciplined officers to always rely on God as they went about in their daily work.
He also urged them to ensure that they set good examples to their families as men and women of God.
“This way, we shall manage to institute a God-fearing society within our officers and their families,” he said.
The Bishop commended his counterpart, Bishop Anyolo for having been in that office for a total of 14 years.
“He has steered the ship so well that he deserves such a commendation,” said Bishop Mugambi.
On his part, Bishop Anyolo wished Bishop Mugambi a fruitful service in the office.
He also called on the commandants and their servicemen to support the Bishop.
He thanked the Bishops for having seen the need to institute chaplaincy services within men and women men in the country’s security field.
Addressing the congregation, President Mwai kibaki, who is commander-in-Chief of Defence Forces of the country, thanked the Church for its chaplaincy services within our forces.
“Both the moral and spiritual uprightness was necessary for a serviceman or women,” he said.
He said, “Our country is in need of a renewed spirit of unity especially in the period leading to the general elections and implementation of a devolved system of Government.
“I strongly believe that the Church will play a frontline role in preaching peace and unity. I also appeal to our security forces to remain vigilant and guard against forces that seek to divide our nation,” he emphasized.
