Catholic Communications, Sydney Archdiocese REPORT
10 Aug 2012
The New Evangelisation needs a new dedication by all Catholics, Archbishop Salvatore (Rino) Fisichella said in his keynote address at the opening of the Proclaim 2012 Conference yesterday.
President of the Pontifical Council for the Promotion of the New Evangelisation in Rome, Archbishop Fisichella told 500 youth leaders, parish priests, religious, diocesan and parish staff, volunteers, educators, school principals and individuals of all ages that proclamation of the Gospel could not be delegated to others.
"Rather it requires the awareness specific to the believer," he said adding it was a "mistake to see the New Evangelisation purely as a response to strong pressure from secularism."
While he acknowledged the reality of such pressure, he emphasised that the primary motive for evangelisation had never changed in the 2000 year history of the Church and was a response to the Lord Jesus who commanded the faithful to go into the world and bring His Gospel to every creature.
Every Catholic was a bearer of Christ, he reminded those at the Conference.
He also pointed to the close and special link between the New Evangelisation and the liturgy as ideal opportunities to present and promote the faith.
Baptisms, funerals and weddings brought many people into the church.
"But how many people who take part in these ceremonies are 'indifferent' to religion?" he asked and is convinced that while these people may appear to be indifferent in today's world many in fact were searching for genuine spirituality.
They want answers to questions such as "Who am I?" and "Where am I going ?"and need and want something to believe in, he said.
On his first visit to Australia, Archbishop Fisichella flew to Sydney for Proclaim 2012, Australia's first-ever national conference on the New Evangelisation.
The three-day conference is an initiative of the Australian Catholic Bishops' Conference (ACBC) and has been organised by Catholic Mission Australia and the Catholic Enquiry Centre's National Office for Evangelisation.
One of the key events celebrating the Year of Grace, Proclaim 2012 aims to deepen understanding of the New Evangelisation, showcase what is happening in evangelisation and the Catholic Church and begin developing a map for the future.
Proclaim 2012 with the wide range of seminars and line up of national and international speakers hopes to capture the energy, enthusiasm and experience of those involved in the New Evangelisation and spread this to parishes across the country.
"Many parishes know or have heard about the New Evangelisation but want to learn more and have the information and the tools to go out and evangelise among their parishes, schools and communities," Marita Winters, Director of the Catholic Enquiry Centre's National Office for the New Evangelisation explains. "The conference is about making parishes stronger and our hope is that those attending will get a shot in the arm that revitalises their faith and ministries."
Today's keynote address will be given by international speaker, trainer, ministry consultant, US-based Martha Fernandez-Sardina. With more than 20 years working in the fields of evangelisation, catechesis, apologetics and youth and young adult ministry, she is experienced at forming parish evangelisation teams, developing training and outreach programs.
In her address today she will focus on "Personal Conversion: An Indispensable Key in Personal and Parish Evangelisation."
Tomorrow morning, the final day of Proclaim 2012, Archbishop Fisichella will give his second keynote address at the conference with a talk entitled: "Jesus and the Year of Faith Impelling the New Evangelisation."
It is hoped the conference will be held every two years.
