The post was vacated by Archbishop Jose Palma when he was named prelate of Cebu last year.
At least 1,000 people including Archbishop Guiseppe Pito attended the installation rites this morning in a ceremony that local journalist Eileen Nazareno-Ballesteros called the “grandest so far in recent years.”
Archbishop Du was born on October 18, 1954 in Cebu City and was ordained a priest on June 1, 1979. He became a bishop in 1998.
Palo was created as a diocese on November 28, 1937 and was elevated as an archdiocese on November 15, 1982.
The archdiocese covers the province of Leyte, which is being served by around 150 diocesan priests and 20 religious. It has a population of about 1.7 million, 80 percent of whom are Catholics.
